Many Police Departments require a High School diploma and some departments require a 2 year or 4 year college degree.
You are usually required to complete a written exam, oral exam, physiological exam, background exam, physical exam and completion of a Police Academy.

Each state employs police offers. Whether it is at the local, county or state level there are always opportunities to get a police related career. The usual first steps are as follows:
1. Find a vacancy
2. Complete an application and ensure that you meet the qualifications to become employed.
3. Most agencies require a written exam.
4. Upon successful completion of the written exam you will be required to pass the following exams:
a. Physical Exam
b. Psycological Exam
c. Medical Exam
d. Background Investigation
e. Possibly a drug test and a polygraph examination.
Remember each agency is different and could require all of the above, part of the above or other requirements not listed.
5. Upon successful completion of all requirements, you will be required to attend a police academy for approximately 6 months of training.
6. Upon being hired you must pass the probationary period, which usually requires a field training period and the probationary period could last for up to 2 years.
